Once you start noticing books in Pokémon card art, you can’t stop. Trainers buried in research, Pokémon curled up among the shelves, quiet studies lit by a single desk lamp. It’s one of the coziest recurring motifs in the whole TCG, and there are far more of them than you’d expect. Here’s our running list of the best Pokémon cards with books in them.

Libraries & Studies Book Cards

The purest version of the theme, where the room is the subject and the Pokémon is a guest in it. Espeon V and Litten were the obvious picks here, and we love the cozier, old school look of Team Rocket’s Meowth and Herdier.

Working & Studying Book Cards

These are books as a job rather than a pastime. From a field researcher taking notes on a Mantyke tank, to Gardevoir keeping watch on the night shift and Eevee turning somebody’s office into a disaster area, there are so many good ones in this bucket that we had a hard time picking what goes in the image.

School & Classroom Book Cards

Same energy, but make it even more academic with chalkboards, desks, museum field trips, and school cafeterias. (Noting Penny doesn’t have a book in the scene, but it was too good to leave out for a page like this!)

Trainers with Books & Reading Cards

You’ve already met a few bookish trainers up above, and this is the extension of it. There are a ton of these so we’re leading with our favorites, and between a Champion hiding away with a novel and a school nurse carrying more books than anyone should attempt at once, Supporters are where the TCG does its best character writing.

Cozy & Home Life Book Cards

Homes where books happen to live, rather than rooms built around them. A lot of the fun here is in the attack names, since Espurr’s is Nap and Minccino’s is Cleaning Up, and Joltik earns its place on lore alone given the Pokédex says city Joltik siphon electricity out of household outlets.

More Book & Reading Cards

A few that didn’t fit any bucket but were too good to cut. We love the Shadow Rider Calyrex V, and it’s a very reasonable pickup for how beautiful it is. Poltchageist gets a storehouse packed with clutter, which suits a Pokémon whose Ability is literally called Storehouse Hideaway, and Galarian Perrserker V is having a much better day than whoever owns that desk.

Our Picks:

Affordable & Common Book Cards

There are plenty more book cards out there that aren’t full arts, and they hold their own on a themed page!
