There are cute Pokémon cards, pretty Pokémon cards, and then there are the ones that just hit different. The cards where the art direction goes somewhere unexpected, where the energy is darker or more cinematic or just really more interesting than a standard card has any right to be. This is our running list of those cards!

Ascended Heroes Set

Ascended Heroes is stacked with great art, but these three are the ones the community keeps coming back to. Mega Gengar ex leans all the way into its chaotic, unsettling side, Mega Dragonite ex is unexpectedly soft and dreamy for such a powerhouse, and even Pikachu ex gets a quiet, storybook forest scene that’s way more considered than most Pikachu cards bother with. Ascended Heroes is a generational set, and these chase cards fully reflect that.

Coolest Ascended Heroes Cards

Mega Charizard X ex · Phantasmal Flames

Danciao, the artist behind that Mega Gengar we just gushed over, is also behind this Mega Charizard and it shows. The card works the full Charmander evolution line into the art, which makes it one of the best Charizard cards to come out in a long time. The black and blue X colorway already sets it apart from every other Charizard out there, and we especially love the Japanese version because the text doesn’t run over Charmander’s face.

Coolest Phantasmal Flames Card

Zekrom & Reshiram · Black Bolt / White Flare

The black, white, and red cards from these two sets might be the top chase, but these two SIRs are right up there. Both have a real sense of aura to them, and when you place them side by side they read almost like matching artwork, Zekrom crackling with storm energy and Reshiram bright and blazing. The Tao duo has always been better as a pair, and these cards lean into that perfectly.

Zekrom & Reshiram Cards

Mewtwo

Mewtwo doesn’t really need much explaining when it comes to cool looking Pokémon. These are a few of the best looking Mewtwo cards out there, and they all show off just how much of a boss it really is, from the Team Rocket’s Mewtwo ex cards with Giovanni lurking in frame to the classic Mewtwo GX escaping its containment tank. Few Pokémon carry this kind of presence.

Coolest Mewtwo Cards

Tag Teams

There are so many good cards from the Tag Team era, and these three promos are no different. Fan favorite Pokémon mixed with creative artwork is a recipe for a cool card every time, whether it’s the moody city rooftops behind Umbreon & Darkrai, the storm around Pikachu & Zekrom, or the gorgeous stained glass treatment on the legendary bird trio. That last one is a real standout.

Cool Tag Teams Pokémon Cards

Black, White & Red Cards

If Black Bolt and White Flare have a top chase, it’s these. Stripping the art down to pure black, white, and red gives them a graphic, almost poster like quality you don’t see anywhere else in the hobby. Zekrom in full black and Reshiram in full white are the obvious headliners, but the red Victini sneaks in as a surprise favorite, the single color treatment just works.

Black, White & Red Pokémon Cards

Mega Latias · Mega Evolution

Mega Latias ex is one of the most striking cards in the Mega Evolution set, and it doesn’t get talked about nearly enough. The whole thing is a swirl of color and motion, Latias caught mid-flight in a burst of reds and golds that feels more like a painting than a card. It’s sweeping and cinematic in a way that makes it worth chasing on art alone.

Lugia V · Silver Tempest

The Lugia V alternate full art from Silver Tempest is one of the best V cards of the entire Sword & Shield era, full stop. It goes for real scale and mood, Lugia emerging out of a stormy sea with a lone figure watching from a boat below. That sense of scene and atmosphere is exactly the kind of thing we love, and it’s a card that still stops us every time.

Reshiram · Radiant Collection

Reshiram is a beautiful Pokémon to begin with and this card gives it artwork to match. The portrait-style framing, all soft whites against a shower of red rose petals, makes it one of the more unique and genuinely pretty cards you can add to a collection. It’s an older card from Legendary Treasures Radiant Collection that collectors tend to rediscover and instantly fall for.

Crown Zenith Galarian Gallery Gold Cards

The gold secret rares from Crown Zenith’s Galarian Gallery are some of the most collectible cards of the Sword & Shield era, and together they make an incredible display set. Giratina, Palkia, Dialga, and Arceus all got the gold treatment, and lined up they’re stunning. Giratina is probably the strongest of the four on its own, the gold plays beautifully against its shadow-realm art.

Cool Gold Pokémon Cards

The Dogs · Crown Zenith

The legendary beast trio from Crown Zenith’s Galarian Gallery might be the best group of cards in the whole set. Each one gets its own atmosphere, Raikou tearing across a sunset sky, Entei posed against an erupting volcano, and Suicune drifting through an icy, aurora-lit landscape. They’re gorgeous individually and even better as a set of three.

Cool Dogs Pokémon Cards

Eeveelutions · Crown Zenith / Evolving Skies

Prismatic Evolutions gets all the Eeveelution attention, but these cards from Crown Zenith and Evolving Skies are sometimes overlooked, and they shouldn’t be. Glaceon and Leafeon VSTAR from the Galarian Gallery are beautiful, and then there’s the Umbreon V alt art. Unpopular opinion: we might like this Umbreon just as much as Moonbreon, if not more.

Cool Eeveelution Pokémon Cards

151 Trio

The whole 151 set feels generational when it comes to artwork, especially the cards featuring the Pokémon so many of us grew up on. The top trio chase cards are the clearest example, Venusaur in a lush overgrown garden, Blastoise deep underwater, and Charizard soaring over a volcanic sunset. They’re some of the coolest cards out there and an easy set to want all three of.

Best 151 Pokémon Cards

Kingdra ex

Personally one of our favorite cards, and the one that got our friends back into collecting. The Japanese-inspired artwork, all crashing waves and a moon hanging low behind Kingdra, makes it such a stunning card to have in the PC. If this style is your thing, it’s right at home alongside our roundup of cards inspired by real art.

Shinji Kanda

Shinji Kanda is one of the most popular Pokémon card artists around, and it’s easy to see why when you line up cards like these. His work has a dense, textured, almost woodblock print quality that makes every card feel like a full illustration you can get lost in. The Roaring Moon ex, Magikarp, and Giratina V here are three of his best, and all three reward a long look.

Cool Shinji Kanda Cards

Urban Night Cards

There’s something special about Pokémon looking over the city while everyone’s asleep. This little grouping is all about that after-dark energy, the Mewtwo promo perched above a glittering skyline, Ceruledge glowing over a distant town, and the Noivern V alt art gliding past a Gotham-esque cityscape. Together they make a killer themed trio.

Cool Urban Pokémon Cards

Mega Attack Rares

These are the dynamic, action-packed alt arts from Ascended Heroes, with big Japanese attack text splashed across each one, and they’ve got a completely different energy from the portrait-style SIRs. Mega Gengar and Mega Dragonite in particular make great cheaper alternatives to their SIR counterparts if you love the look but not the price tag. Mega Froslass rounds out the trio nicely.

Best Mega Attack Rare Cards

Skyridge Set

Skyridge is one of the most visually distinctive sets in the entire history of the hobby, thanks to its one-of-a-kind holo pattern that’s never been repeated. The Gyarados, Articuno, and Houndoom holos are worth chasing just to see that crosshatch shimmer in person. These are older cards, but the art holds up and the holo makes them instantly recognizable.

Cool Skyridge Pokémon Cards

Team Rocket’s Set

The original Team Rocket set still has one of the coolest aesthetics in the game’s history. Turning fan-favorite Pokémon dark, sinister, and a little villainous was such a strong concept, and the starry backgrounds only add to the vibe. Dark Charizard and Dark Blastoise are the big names, but Dark Dragonite is just as good.

Team Rocket's Pokémon Cards

Galarian Moltres · Chilling Reign

The Galarian Moltres V alt art is one of the best single cards of the Sword & Shield era. That crimson and shadow palette against a full moon turns Moltres into something closer to a dark deity than a bird, and the symmetry of the composition makes it feel almost mythological. It’s a completely fresh take on a legendary a lot of people have real nostalgia for.

Legend Collection · Lugia & Rayquaza

These are some of the most unconventional cards ever printed. Each Legend card is split into two halves, and only when you put them together do you get the full picture, a sweeping Lugia diving into the ocean, or Rayquaza and Deoxys tangled together. Needing both halves makes collecting them a fun little challenge, and the payoff when you complete one is so worth it.

Coolest Connecting Pokémon Cards

Ethan’s Typhlosion · Destined Rivals

The character trainer cards from Destined Rivals are some of the best of the recent SV era, and Ethan’s Typhlosion is the standout. There’s plenty of Gold & Silver nostalgia baked in, but the explosive, dynamic art keeps it from feeling like a simple callback, Typhlosion erupting into flame with Ethan mid-battle in front of it. A proper showcase for an underrated starter.

Mewtwo & Charizard · Galarian Gallery

Two cards, both doing something special. The Mewtwo VSTAR and Charizard VSTAR from the Galarian Gallery are the kind of full scene battle art that pulls you right in, the two of them clashing across a rocky landscape with energy flying everywhere. They pair perfectly, and either one holds its own as a centerpiece.

Mewtwo & Charizard Card

N’s Cards

N is one of the most beloved characters in the whole franchise, and these cards lean right into his story, Reshiram and Zekrom standing behind him as extensions of his ideals. N’s Reshiram from Journey Together and N’s Zekrom from the Mega Evolution promos are the highlights, and N’s Plan, with the warm ferris wheel scene, ties the whole thing together beautifully.

Coolest N's Pokémon Cards

Kyogre & Groudon

The Double Crisis mini-set doesn’t get nearly enough love. Team Aqua’s Kyogre ex and Team Magma’s Groudon ex are the standouts, and the Team Aqua / Team Magma framing, complete with Archie and Maxie in the art, gives both cards a distinct identity beyond just “cool legendary.” They’re a fun, characterful pair that too many people sleep on.
