Trainer cards are where the Pokémon world gets its people. For years they were the ones you played without looking at, and now they’re some of the most collected art in the hobby, full arts and special illustration rares included.

We’ve gathered the best Pokémon trainer cards here, from the cutest supporters to the characters with enough cards to fill a binder page on their own!

Cute Trainer Cards

The biggest section here, and the easiest place to start a page. Skyla, Lana and Rosa all turn up more than once, which makes them good anchors if you want to build around a single character. If you want more in this vein, we have a whole roundup of cute Pokémon cards beyond the trainers!

The Coolest Pokémon Trainer Cards

The other end of the spectrum. Villains, rivals, champions, and at least one Team Rocket scheme in progress. There’s crossover with our roundup of the coolest Pokémon cards if you want the Pokémon side of this too!

Pokémon Cards with Their Trainers

Technically these are Pokémon cards, not trainer cards, but the trainer is right there in the frame. The Trainer Gallery subsets from Brilliant Stars through Crown Zenith did most of the heavy lifting, and the trainer prefixed cards that started showing up in Destined Rivals have picked the idea back up!

Lillie’s Cards

Lillie has more cards built around her than nearly any other character outside the main rivals, and she’s one of the most collected trainers in the hobby. Her Clefairy alone turns up four times in this section.

Our Picks:

Lillie's Trainer Pokemon Cards

N’s Cards

N comes with his Pokémon attached, which is why this section has nearly as many Reshirams and Zekroms as it does him. Black Bolt and Journey Together both leaned into that connection, so his cards tend to work better as a set than one at a time.

Ash’s Cards

Everything here is Japanese, since Ash never got the same treatment in English. The Ash vs Team Rocket deck kit is where most of them live, and picking up the kit is the simplest way to get several at once.

Our Picks:

Ash's Pokémon Trainer Cards

Red’s Cards

A shorter run, but Red gets the kind of cards that suit him. Mostly Pikachu, which is the point.

Our Picks:

Red's Pokémon Trainer Cards

Ethan’s Cards

One of the newest trainer runs, all of it out of Destined Rivals and Ascended Heroes. He got a Ho-Oh ex in two versions, which makes a neat pair if you’re building a page around him.

Our Picks:

Ethan's Trainer Cards

Misty’s Cards

Misty has been getting cards since Gym Heroes, which gives her the longest run of anyone here. It goes from the Gym era supporters through dozens of modern cards with her Pokémon, and includes Misty’s Tears, which ended up on our list of banned Pokémon cards.

Our Picks:

Misty's Trainer Cards

The Friends in… Supporter Cards

A small family of cards that all do the same thing: put a region’s cast into one frame. Paldea, Sinnoh, Hisui and Galar each get one, and each of them turns up twice here!

Our Picks:

The Friends in... Supporter Cards

Affordable & Common Trainer Cards

Most of the characters above also have a plain version sitting in the main run of their set. No full art treatment, and they’re the easiest way to get a page going before you chase the big ones.
